General Motors is currently prepping its Detroit-Hamtramck plant for production of its Chevrolet Volt – which is slated to begin rolling off the assembly line in late 2010 – but a new report indicates another GM sedan will also be joining the Detroit-area factory.
According to The Detroit News, GM is planning to build the next-generation 2012 Chevrolet Malibu at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant. GM has already committed $336 million to upgrading the Detroit-Hamtramck plant for Volt production.

    General Motors has yet to make an official announcement on the subject, but UAW Local 22 – which staffs the Detroit-Hamtramck plant — head Frank Moultrie confirmed the production shift.
The Chevrolet Malibu is currently produced at GM’s Fairfax plant in Kansas City. GM has only committed to producing the Malibu at the plant until 2011 while promising a new mid-size car to the Detroit-Hamtramck plant by 2012. The Malibu will likely displace Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne production at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant.
Additionally, the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will produce the Volt’s sister car – the Opel Ampera – for the European market.
